Abstract
Within 10 months after the publication of Ordinum Pietas Grotius finished work on another book partly on the same subject, his Tractatus de jure magistratuum, which remained unpublished. In 1997 that work was rediscovered in manuscript form. In this paper the author examines the differences and correspondences between the two treatises, and gives a characterization of them. He suggests answers to the question why Grotius wrote the Tractatus as he did, and why he did not publish it after all. © 2013 Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden.
