Abstract
Periphrastic causative is one of important categories in causative representation. However, no investigations have been done on the finer semantic categories of periphrastic causative verbs in mandarin Chinese. Through empirical study, the article investigates the semantic categories of periphrastic causative verbs in mandarin Chinese by adopting MDS in statistics. It shows that periphrastic causative verbs in mandarin Chinese fall into 4 types: CAUSE, ENABLE, LET, and PREVENT. This article has significant reference value for choosing linguistic structures for causal description via setting up the specific classification levels for periphrastic causative verbs.
