Abstract
The omikron variant of the coronavirus is a neat example of how smart evolution can be instrumental to promote the existence of a species. Omikron is much more contagious than the delta variant and has quickly displaced it. Moreover, omikron is less pathogenic, so that less effort will be made by us to slow down the spread of the virus. For a moment the thought arises that omikron would have been a perfect design when the goal were to change the DNA of the virus so that it is less of a burden for future economic development. However, it should be noted immediately that this would of course be a dangerous and ethically unacceptable intervention. That is why it is good to leave evolution to nature itself.
