Abstract

This chapter discusses the ways social media offer users distinct affordances, or possibilities for action, relative to other forms of media and the implications of those affordances for privacy. By shaping perceptions of what individuals can and cannot accomplish with social media, affordances shape the ways individuals pursue privacy goals through communication. However, social media affordances also create problems for our understanding of privacy online by calling into question who and what can enable or constrain communicative action. An agenda is offered for scholars hoping to apply an affordances perspective to the ongoing study of social media use and privacy.
