Abstract

This chapter discusses the view on God's sovereignty of Abraham Kuyper (1837–1920) and Herman Bavinck (1854–1921). The focus on this divine attribute characterizes Neo-Calvinism and leads to a difference in emphasis with earlier Reformed theology. Kuyper mainly uses his concept of sovereignty to substantiate specific aspects of his theology, such as 'common grace' and 'justification of eternity'. Bavinck connects God's sovereignty to the covenant to explain how our dependence on God and our freedom can go together.
