Abstract
Spiritual care, an integral part of holistic well-being, extends beyond physical and psychological support, addressing existential concerns and an individual’s connection to the sacred. Rooted in the Hindu worldview, spiritual care integrates philosophical concepts such as dharma (duty), karma (action and consequence), and atman (the true self) to guide individuals through crises, grief, and personal dilemmas. This chapter explores Hindu spiritual care in both in-faith and interfaith contexts, particularly its institutionalization in the Netherlands. Given the migration patterns of Hindu communities, spiritual caregiving has evolved from informal familial guidance to professionalized care in hospitals, prisons, and military settings. A key focus of this study is the H Framework, derived from Hindu existential principles and inspired by Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtras. This framework aids caregivers in identifying spiritual distress, uncovering its root causes, envisioning an alternative state, and fostering a conviction for transformation. Through a case study of a Hindu spiritual caregiver aiding a prisoner grappling with grief and remorse, the chapter illustrates how Hindu practices—such as yoga, satsaṃga (spiritual gatherings), and narrative therapy using Hindu epics—facilitate healing and self-awareness. Despite the rich philosophical underpinnings of Hindu spirituality, its professional application remains underdeveloped compared to Christian chaplaincy. The study underscores the need for academic research, competency development, and theoretical refinement to enhance Hindu spiritual care, making it accessible across diverse cultural and interfaith settings. Ultimately, Hindu spiritual care’s integrative nature holds potential for broader interfaith dialogue and holistic well-being.
