Abstract

Hinduism, one of the world’s oldest spiritual traditions, has exhibited a remarkable ability to adapt to technological advancements while maintaining its core philosophical principles. This chapter explores the intersection of Hindu spirituality and technology, examining how Hindu thought provides a unique perspective on technological progress and its implications. Central to this perspective is the notion that technology, like all aspects of existence, is an expression of an underlying unity, governed by cosmic order (ṛta) and the principle of karma.

The study delves into Hinduism’s holistic approach to technology, which integrates spirituality with material advancements. It highlights key philosophical principles, including interconnectedness, non-attachment, and embodied knowing, which shape ethical engagements with technology. These principles provide a framework for assessing both the benefits and risks of emerging innovations such as artificial intelligence (AI) and automation. Hindu philosophy acknowledges AI as an extension of divine intelligence but also warns against its potential to detach humanity from spiritual fulfillment. The chapter further examines the impact of industrial revolutions through a Hindu lens, emphasizing how technological shifts have influenced human consciousness and ethical values. It critiques the increasing materialistic orientation of modern technology and advocates for a balanced approach that aligns technological progress with spiritual growth. The study underscores the need for ethical responsibility in technological development, ensuring that advancements foster harmony, sustainability, and holistic well-being. By integrating Hindu philosophical insights into contemporary technological discourse, this chapter provides a valuable perspective on navigating the ethical and spiritual challenges posed by rapid technological evolution.
