Abstract
About 60% of employers in the Netherlands use flexible contracts. How they use these contracts can affect the careers of workers on flexible contracts. Therefore, it is important to better understand the different ways employers use flexible contracts. In this study, we used registry data to cluster employers based on their actual use of temporary contracts,
on-call contracts and temporary agency workers. We take into account the possibility that employers use such contracts differently for groups of workers performing different types of tasks. We then use the results of the clustering as determinant of the career outcomes of individuals who enter the labor market on flexible contracts. The relationship between employer strategies and workers’ career outcomes was examined through a competing
risks event history analysis. The results show that workers who enter the labour market at employers who use flexible contracts to screen new hires are most likely to make a transition to a permanent contract and workers who enter at employers that use flexible contracts to increase adaptability are most likely to remain in flexible work or make a transition to joblessness
