Abstract
Attempted suicide treated in Dutch general hospitals Objective. The goal of this study was to describe the incidence of attempted suicides treated at emergency wards and admissions in Dutch hospitals, to present some demographic characteristics and characteristics of the suicidal act, and to reflect on some characteristics of the treatment during 2000-2004. The ratio of attempted suicide: suicide was investigated. Design. Descriptive Method. The results from 2000- 2004 of the Dutch Injury Surveillance System (LIS) of the Consumer Safety Institute and the Dutch Information System on Hospital Care and Day Nursing (LMR) of Prismant were analysed. Data on suicides was obtained from the Central Bureau for Statistics in The Netherlands. Results: Around 14,000 times annually Emergency Departments in Dutch hospitals treat a patient because of attempted suicide. In around 9,500 cases this leads to an admission. The direct medical costs associated with the care for attempted suicide amounts to 35 million Euros.Attempted suicide accounts for approximately 1% of all treatments on Emergency Departments.Around a quarter of all patients attending the Emergency Department because of attempted suicide are seen by a psychiatrist or psychiatric resident. Demographic characteristics are as usual: mostly young females overdosing medication often combined with alcohol ingestion. Conclusion: The numbers of patients attending hospital because of attempted suicide and their characteristics have not changed compared with previous studies. Roughly on each case of suicide nine attempted suicides are treated in hospitals.
