Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the economics of competition in the pharmaceutical sector. It starts with the basics: the financing of innovation through the patent system, its rationale, practice and a short discussion of alternative financing models. The chapter then discusses the relationship between competition and the negotiation of prices, its rationale, underlying principles, bargaining theory and the potential problems associated with current practices. The chapter concludes with suggestions for improving competition while retaining the incentives for innovation.
