The Linguistic Milieu of Elephantine Aramaic: Persian Loanwords and Examples of Egyptian Code-switching

Research output: Chapter in Book / Report / Conference proceedingChapterAcademicpeer-review

Abstract

This contribution is devoted to several lexical aspects of the Aramaic documents from Elephantine written by the island’s Judean population. It examines the distribution and integration of lexical materials from languages other than Aramaic in these documents, with a focus on Old Persian loanwords and instances of Egyptian code-switching (rather than loanwords). It represents an attempt to better our understanding of the linguistic milieu of Elephantine Aramaic.
