Abstract
This article is inspired by late sociologist Syed Hussein Alatas’ scholarship in development studies. It discusses the problem of uncritical imitation that is foundational to the structure of present “global human development” agenda, such as the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (2000–2015) and Sustainable Development Goals (2015–2030). Drawing on Lebanon as an empirical case study, this article proposes that the practice of uncritical imitation leads to misinterpretation of data, misconception of problems, and missed opportunity for realizing what Alatas calls “creative development.”
