Abstract
At the centre of the action in the First World War, the trench coat starts its journey through the major political struggles of the twentieth century. Everywhere it goes the coat signals a disturbance in the order of things. In literature and film the trench coat fortified bodies against adverse environments, but went on to become an enduring fashion statement. A catalyst for exploring various twentieth century struggles and preoccupations, Trench Coat tells the story of seductive entanglements with technology, time, law, politics, trust and trespass. This book explores trench coats in literature, film, history and popular culture revealing the violent imaginaries at work in designed objects.
