Abstract
Provisional results of the 1981 New Zealand census have been used to examine unemployment and labour force participation. The main findings are: the growth of the work force has been slowing down; there has been a decline in male and an increase in female participation rates; Maoris have lower participation rates and higher unemployment rates than non-Maoris; the proportion of unemployed registered as such has increased; the number of potential workers discouraged form entering the labour force has grown.
