Abstract

The aftermath of the global financial crisis of 2008 marks a ‘stress test' for
European welfare states. The Euro crisis is bringing the European Union to a new political crossroads, raising the stakes for devising effective pan-European macro economic governance structure and timely social policy intervention above and across the EU member states. The key challenge is to make long-term social
investment and short-term fiscal consolidation mutually supportive both in the EU
and the Member States.
